The official symbol and flag for the Vatican City was created on June 7th, 1929. That year Pope Pius XI put into effect the Lateran Treaty along with Italy, which made the new independent state. Many refer to the flag as “Flag of the Holy See.”

The flag is split down the middle with the left side being gold, or yellow and the right white. On the middle of the right panel, two keys are crossed, one gold and one silver representing Saint Peter and Papal Tiara. The Vatican City Flag is one of two square country flags in the world along side Switzerland, both sharing a 1:1 ratio.
